Why The X-Files' Animated Series Needs Darin Morgan?

FOX is pushing ahead with a comedic animated spinoff of The X-Files, but for the idea to be successful, writer Darin Morgan needs to be involved. Awhile back, it was first announced that this spinoff was happening, tentatively titled The X-Files: Albuquerque. The spinoff will put the spotlight on a never before seen subdivision of the X-Files office, and feature a team of new agents.

These new agents will be tasked with investigating X-Files deemed too silly, stupid, or otherwise not worth the time of Mulder and Scully. Diehard X-Files fans will probably be quick to point out that The X-Files: Albuquerque's premise makes no sense, as for one, Mulder and Scully investigated lots of ridiculous cases, and two, the X-Files office itself was already considered the B-team by the FBI. There suddenly being X-Files agents under Mulder and Scully would be quite the confusing development.

There's certainly lots of potential for comedy in The X-Files, which has always been best exemplified by the episodes written by Darin Morgan.

Over the years, Darin Morgan has penned The X-Files episodes "Blood,""Humbug,""Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose,""War of the Coprophages,""Jose Chung's From Outer Space,""Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-Monster," and "The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat." Among that lot are some of the funniest, and most beloved, episodes of The X-Files to ever air.

That said, if an X-Files animated comedy series is going to work, it very much needs to enlist Morgan in some way, whether that be showrunner, writer, producer, consultant, or anything else along those lines. He may not be interested in a job too demanding on his time, but FOX absolutely needs to get him onboard creatively in some fashion. The premise of The X-Files: Albuquerque sounds like it could go either way, ending up hilarious or excruciatingly stupid. With Morgan in the mix, the spinoff could well end up being hilariously stupid, and that's meant in the kindest of ways. No one does wacky X-Files like Morgan.
